Field Environmental Decision Support (FIELDS) System
InStep Software is currently working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund Division on the Field Environmental Decision Support (FIELDS) System. The FIELDS System provides sophisticated site and contamination analysis while integrating geographic information systems (GIS), imaging software, global positioning system (GPS), and in-field sampling and analysis technology. The FIELDS software is a set of tools that assist in various aspects of hazardous waste site remediation, including geo-statistical sample design, data modeling, and data analysis. The FIELDS system works in conjunction with ESRI's ArcGIS application software, and is being developed using ESRI's ArcObjects library and C# under Microsoft's Visual Studio .Net development environment.

Rapid Assessment Tool (R.A.T.)
The Rapid Assessment Tool (RAT) is a stand-alone application built by InStep Software to provide real-time data collection and visualization for both the EPA's emergency response team as well as site remediation staff. Multiple GPS devices and external sensors' data can be mapped spatially in a continuous or single point collection mode depending on the device types and capabilities. Location values from the GPS are merged with the external device outputs and stored as well as output to the GIS window. Prior to data collection the application allows users to query an Oracle 10g spatial database for background information (such as nearby roads, schools, hospitals, or waterways) which is then converted to shapefiles for viewing. The application permits background aerials to be loaded and allows the user to establish threshold levels for display and alarming. While RAT is a self-contained application collected data can also be exported into other mapping and analysis software, including ESRI's ArcGIS software, if desired. Portions of the application were developed using C++, Visual Basic.Net and Java.
